Rough extent of the mid roman republic in 220BCE

Mid Republic Romans

The Roman army of the mid-Republic was one of the most adaptable and resilient military forces of the ancient world. This period followed the conquest of Italy and saw Rome emerge as a Mediterranean superpower, fighting in the Punic Wars, the Macedonian Wars, and numerous campaigns across Spain, Gaul, and the Greek world.

The Manipular Legion

The core of the army was the manipular legion, a flexible formation developed after Romeโ€™s early defeats by the Samnites. Each legion consisted of roughly 4,200โ€“5,000 infantry and 300 cavalry, divided into three lines of heavy infantry: Hastati (young soldiers), Principes (experienced men), and Triarii (veteran spearmen). These lines were organised into maniples โ€” small tactical units of about 120 men โ€” allowing for greater manoeuvrability than earlier phalanx-style formations.

Troops carried a scutum (large curved shield), a gladius (short stabbing sword), and pila (throwing spears). Roman soldiers were typically citizen-farmers, serving in campaigns during the summer and returning home between seasons.

The armyโ€™s strength lay in its discipline, engineering, and organisation. Roman legions could build fortified camps daily, march great distances, and lay siege with impressive skill. Auxiliaries and allied troops (socii) played key supporting roles, especially in cavalry and light infantry.

Victories and Decline

Major conflicts like the Second Punic War (218โ€“201 BCE) tested the Roman system to its limits. Though Hannibal inflicted crushing defeats at Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae, Romeโ€™s deep manpower reserves and strategic persistence led to ultimate victory.

By the late 2nd century BCE, cracks were forming: prolonged campaigns, land loss, and increasing dependence on allied and mercenary forces began to shift the social and structural fabric of the army โ€” setting the stage for dramatic reforms and civil war in the next era.

Where possible I have sculpted models to be self supporting. I add supports during my sculpting process rather than afterward. The integration of supports into design allows me to reduce the number of supports needed, and to position them more favourably. My supports need to be removed with clippers or a scalpel. All models requiring supports are also supplied in an unsupported format.

Some infantry models are also supplied in 13.5mm scale strips. Strip mounted models are supplied on strips intended for use on 60mm wide bases. If you wish to print my 15mm sculpts in 13.5mm please scale them by 0.9.
