Goths 15mm

Rough illustration of the home territory of the Goths

The Goths

The Goths were a Germanic people originally from the Baltic region, who by the late 4th century CE had migrated into areas near the Danube frontier of the Roman Empire. Pressured by the advancing Huns, a large group of Tervings and Greuthungs, crossed into Roman territory in 377 CE, seeking asylum.

Mistreatment by Roman officials sparked the Gothic War (377โ€“382 CE), culminating in the disastrous Battle of Adrianople (378 CE), where the Goths, under Fritigern, destroyed a Roman army and killed Emperor Valens. This marked a turning point: Perhaps Rome would never so confidently dominate the battlefield in the East.

The Visigoths became foederati (allied tribes) but remained restive. Under Alaric I, they invaded Italy and famously sacked Rome in 410 CE.

By 419 CE, the Visigoths had settled in southern Gaul (modern-day France) with Roman permission, forming the nucleus of the Visigothic Kingdom, which would later expand into Hispania. During this period, the Goths transitioned from migrant warriors to kingdom-builders, blending Roman and Germanic traditions.

Where possible I have sculpted models to be self supporting. Where needed, I add supports during my sculpting process rather than afterward. The integration of supports into design allows me to reduce the number of supports needed, and to position them more favourably. My supports need to be removed with clippers or a scalpel. All models requiring supports are also supplied in an unsupported format.
