Samnites 15mm

The Samnites
The Samnites were a confederation of Italic peoples inhabiting the central and southern Apennines of Italy between the 5th and early 3rd centuries BCE. Best known for their conflicts with Rome during the Samnite Wars (343โ290 BCE), they fielded armies well adapted to mountainous terrain and capable of challenging early Roman expansion. Modern understanding of the Samnite army relies heavily on archaeology and visual evidence, as many surviving Roman accounts were written centuries later and may reflect later traditions rather than contemporary reality.
The Samnite military system was based on a tribal levy, with warriors drawn from free male citizens of four tribes: the Pentri, Caudini, Hirpini, and Caraceni. There was no standardised, state-controlled army comparable to later Roman legions. Instead, equipment likely varied according to the wealth of the warrior, though shared cultural norms created a broadly recognisable โSamniteโ style of warfare.
Much of what we know about Samnite equipment comes from tomb paintings (notably at Paestum) and grave finds. These depictions consistently show warriors equipped with large shieldsโeither the Greek-style aspis or an early form of scutumโsuggesting a strong emphasis on close-order protection. Notably, many representations do not show Samnite’s armed with swords, instead, Samnite warriors appear to have relied on spears or javelins, possibly for both throwing and thrusting. This contrasts with later Roman descriptions, which may project later gladiatorial or Romanized interpretations back onto earlier Samnite warfare.
A defining feature of Samnite warriors in the archaeological record is the broad bronze belt, often highly decorated. This seems to have been a key marker of identity and status. Helmets, are typically bronze and sometimes highly decorated with feathers or crests. Another consistent feature is the use of a pair of leg greaves. Where Samnites are depicted with body armour they are shown wearing triple-disc or rectangular plate cuirass.

Where possible I have sculpted models to be self supporting. I add supports during my sculpting process rather than afterward. The integration of supports into design allows me to reduce the number of supports needed, and to position them more favourably. My supports need to be removed with clippers or a scalpel. All models requiring supports are also supplied in an unsupported format in case you would prefer to have full control over support placement.
